PAGE TO BE UPDATED

CouchSurfing is an international network, it started out in English, but that's not the whole world yet! We are working on including people who don't understand the English text. CouchSurfing.org is ongoingly translated by volunteers into an increasing number of languages.

Why Translate the Website?

If people that do not speak English join CouchSurfing because it's translated in their language, how will they be able to interact with travellers? Isn't it foolish to think it will reach a broader public, if people can't speak English anyways? They would have to describe themselves in English, and communicate in English anyways...

What makes us believe it's so important is that at least:

  • People joining the website will lose less time just figuring out what it is all about, how it works, etc.
  • People within a country or a language zone can still start exchanging and "CouchSurfing" and benefit from it
  • If they attend meetings, they will meet foreign people too, and overcome the language barrier in the act of meeting.
  • With more and more contacts in English, their language level will improve and they will have a chance to get more integrated in CouchSurfing over all.

This is debatable, but that is the reasoning behind it.

Becoming a Translator for CS

1. Visit the Translation Group to learn more. There you will see a number of language sub-groups.

2. If you see your language there, get into the sub-group. If there is a moderator to the language sub-group, it means the team has a team leader to whom you should introduce yourself and request permission to get into the team.

3. If there is no sub-group for your language, or your sub-group doesn't have a moderator, it means there is no active team working at the moment. Do you have what it takes to be a team leader ? Would you like to stay in the inactive team for when it becomes active ? Please contact Anick-Marie or Eli regarding that.
