UNDER CONSTRUCTION (MORE TO COME! :))

Colombia is one of the main gateways to South America. The Caribbean coast of Colombia is closer to Miami than Miami is to New York and is the home of incredible geographical diversity (number two in the world for biodiversity). It shares its borders with Panama, Venezuela, Peru, Brazil and Ecuador and it is the only country in South America which has a Caribbean and a Pacific coast (both of which are completely different from one another culturally, topographically and weather patterns). The department of Chocó as well as the Southeastern regions of the country (encompassing parts of the Meta, Vichada, Guainía, Guaviare, Caquetá, Vaupés, Putumayo and Amazonas departments) are covered by lush tropical jungles and rain forests - home to more than 10% of the world's biodiversity.

Colombia encompasses almost ever climate on the planet (with the exception of tundra of course) and has everything a traveler could ask for regarding activities and diversity. If you really wanted to, you could literally go ice climbing and sunbathing by the beach within two days of each other.

Colombia is a country where one has to take his/her time and take on a different approaches and perspectives. For example, if you were to travel to Nariño in the south-west, Caldas in the central northwest, Chocó along the Pacific coast and La Guajira in the far northeast, you might as well be in a different country because they are so incredibly different from one another. Therefore, it is best to look at Colombia in terms of departments (states/provinces) and regions rather than a country as a whole. Here is a list of the 32 departments of Colombia, along with their CS groups, in order of population along with some brief information:

1. Cundinamarca (including D.C.):

UNDER CONSTRUCTION (MORE INFORMATION COMING SOON!)

The capital of Cundinamarca is Botogá which is also the nations capital and largest city (roughly +7 million people in the capital alone) and it is geographically and politically the center of the country. Just about everything you need can be found in Bogotá (variety of restaurants, clubs, bars, shopping, et cetera). Due to the high population of Couchsurfers and ex-pats, it is very easy to find a couch (if it is your first time couchsurfing, please take a few minutes to read these two pages: How to write a Couch Request and How to be a good guest). More information about Couch Requests below.

Precautions:-Cundinamarca - coming soon.

-Bogotá, like any big city, petty theft is quite common. Keep an eye out for your belongings and surroundings. Never walk alone at night, take taxis or travel with a group. Avoid parts of Barrio Bolívar even during the day.

CS groups related to Bogotá and Cundinamarca and how to best utilize them:

The capital of Antioquia is Medellín (also known as Medalló by locals) which is the second largest city in Colombia (roughly +2.5 million people) and it is geographically in the Northwestern part of the country. Medellín is famous for it's nightlife, beautiful women, cleanliness, safety, the only metro in the country, it's dangerous past as well as the infamous Paísa culture/dialect. The department of Antioquia offers a large variety of diversity so take your time here to explore the mountains, the valleys and the Urabá region along the Caribbean coast. Although Medellín is Colombia's second largest city, it isn't easy to find a couch here (most couchsurfers here are unable to host). It is recommended that you send a request at least 10 days in advance to better your chances and make them personalized. Again, if it is your first time couchsurfing, please take a few minutes to read these two pages: How to write a Couch Request and How to be a good guest). More information about Couch Requests below.

Precautions: -Antioquia is a relatively safe department to travel in if you stick to the main roads. In the mountains along the border with Chocó, Córdoba, and the Southeastern part of the department still sees plenty of guerrilla and paramilitary activity. Be sure to check with locals on the current situations.

- Medellín was once the most dangerous city on earth in the 80s. Although it is now one of the safest cities in South America (a lot safer than Bogotá), still be aware of your belongings and surroundings.
