Feedback from CS users at the Berlin CS Meeting on the 1st Dec. 2006

Meeting: CS Berlin Meeting 1st Dec. 2006 Group: Berlin Group Post

I thought it would be a great Idea to spread the word about the collective and to collect some constructive feedback. Hence I printed the latest newsletter as a handout and explained to the attending CouchSurfers what the Collective was all about. Some knew a bit, some did not know it at all or simply thought it was just a great place to hang out for the members - which of course is true, but just a perk then an in itention :-)

To make the whole thing more constructive we did a little brainstorming session and people later wrote down their ideas on some provided paper. Here are the unedited results as far as I can read them:

Q1: What do I like most about CS / What should CS concentrate focus upon?

Joris de Luthen (george70)

Meeting new people from all over the world, cultural exchange, encourage mutual understanding on any possible field (religion, social background)

Irina Aleksandrova (THEWORLDISNOTENOUGH)

I really love the project because of the atmosphere it creates: the world without borders, an open space where everybody is friendly and ready to help. I believe we should focus on developing he community, on involving people into closer friendships, both online and offline. CS should develop into a lifestyle -> and I see it already moves towards it.

It's the only time when a strangers smile welcomes you home. It's an experiment in generosity on all levels.

It's like having 100.000 friends all over the world

Q2: What should be improved at CS / What functions+features am I missing?

Joris de Luthen (george70)

  • DB's speed & usability (less downtime)

-- couldn't agree more Sirius 20:48, 3 December 2006 (EST)

  • be careful offering "too much" functionality, the core features are present :-)

Irina Aleksandrova (THEWORLDISNOTENOUGH)

  • Maybe just some more general information about the places where CSs live is needed. Just some tips about the country/city/village - some pictures of all the small pieces of this perfect world ...

-- I think she talks about extending the wiki Sirius 20:48, 3 December 2006 (EST)

  • Stop begging for money!

--User said he (casey) knew his view by mail already Sirius 20:48, 3 December 2006 (EST)

  • Beg more for money!

--Now that's an interesting twist, mathematically now both statements cancel each other out :-) Sirius 20:48, 3 December 2006 (EST)

Alexander Herrmann (OUTDOORALEX)

  • Give more info about where the hosts live, like district or address if the hosts are OK with it.

-- In discussion was raised that one can already do that in the couch description. Then the idea/clarification came up that in a big city like Berlin, the suburb or even village names (subsets of subburbs) would be very beneficial. Also thee idea cam up to use the google maps api to point to the right location and therefore being able to better match the actual location of the user. Similar like flickr or fon are doing it already. Also, users with security concern could leave it at the center of the town/suburb/village/nearby intersection not to disclose their actual address. This map could then be included in the profile. Initial source for the map could be the address provided. Sirius 20:48, 3 December 2006 (EST)

  • Where the IM-Infos (Instant Messenger) are, put in fields for email and mobile and fixed phone.

-- and let the user chooses to disclose them or not. Sirius 20:48, 3 December 2006 (EST)

  • Allow people to input their itinerary and do "itinerary matching" to see if other CSs are going to a similar place at the same time. Good for lone (female?) travelers.

Joe is working on something like this. Available soon. GuakaTalkCS 23:23, 3 December 2006 (EST)

  • A section for the city where we can announce public parties and things happening -> like a calendar

-- could be an extension to the meeting section as "CS welcome" like making your birthday party public and inviting CS members and maybe "Non CS related", even so I personally would leave out the last or make it at administrator approval so that it can not be abused. • smoker or non-smoker? For me it's very important ...
Will be part of the profile. Together with internet availability, phone numbers, more IM, allergies, food preferences (e.g. vegan). GuakaTalkCS 23:23, 3 December 2006 (EST)

  • I think we should further the Island-Idea ... make it more popular ...

There is a group [1]discussing how to buy an island somewhere in the world to have a cs community live there permanently --202.27.211.113 23:12, 3 December 2006 (EST)
