A DRAFT DESCRIPTION FOR Kammerjäger (vermin exterminator)

Once upon a time in Vienna:
Bontour: "Show it midsch. If there's no bug, there is no code."
midsch: "No code is also a bug."

Contents

Short description

A person/team who/which is monitoring the Cockroachgroup (and everything else related to technical problems with using CS). All problems should be noticed and - if possible - reproduced, verified and reported to the bugtracker. After bugfixes by the techteam the fix should be tested and confirmed as well. Furthermore users reporting bugs at cockroach should be informed (and provided with workarounds, bug status etc.)

Targets

  • Bugfree System (haha)
  • Short reactions on critical bugs
  • Opening a communication channel between users and technocrowd

Amount of time needed

Miniumum: 1-2 hours daily; 3-5 hours once a week
Maximum: no limit

How many people needed

At least one, three would be cool to integrate feature-related work. Finding volunteers for single tasks (like writing a howto, testing a special feature etc.) could be part of the job.

Skills

  • Staying calm!
  • Being able to communicate with very different (and very often upset) persons about things they don't understand.
  • Knowledge about how programming in general works (not necessarily deeper knowledge about Webservices, HTML/CSS, Usability, php/mysql, ...)
  • Ability to organize, structerize, ...
  • [Advanced] Documentation, i. e. writing Howtos (Usage of Wikis)

Application process

Not really necessary, everyone who starts doing this kind of stuff at CSwiki, Cockroach & Mantis could become

Accesslevels

  • CS-Account (ahem, yes!)
  • Mantis-Account (just sign up ..., a developer accesslevel would be useful to reopen bugs and changing categories)
  • Moderator of cockroach
  • Ambassador (usefull, but not necessary)
  • special Mailinglists?
  • [Advanced] WikiSysop (usefull, but not necessary)
  • [Advanced] Maybe the Code itself (? -> NDA issue)
  • [Advanced] Betatestsystem (if there are any ...)

Practice / technics

  • Translation
The most imaginable stupid user and the most geeky technonerd are not speaking the same language. But if they try to speak about the same thing translation is needed. The Kammerjäger is trying to find out what is not working for the user, maybe he/she just needs guidance. If there is a bug, explain and report it to the technocrowd in a way they can handle it.
  • Bugtracking
Finding/Noticing bugs by yourself or from cockroach, Reproducing, verifing and reporting them to the Bugtracker. Giving bugentries a fitting category and severity. Sending reminders or adding information if necessary.
  • Alerts: If a serious bug appears (security hole, no more mailing possible, ...) find someone who can fix it immediately.
  • [Advanced] Betatesting
New features are seldom bugfree ...
  • [Advanced] Documentation
    I. e. howtos for the wiki.
  • [Advanced] Information
Providing all related information at cockroach, sometimes informing other people who should know ...

Communication channels

  • CSmail
  • Mantis
  • CSgroup Cockroach (plus special Groups)
  • ICQ/MSN (direct communication with techteam leader and members)
  • Mail
  • Who you have to know?
Not necessarily in person, but it's important to know, who is in charge.
    • Techteam leader (Now: Chris Burley)
    • Techteam members (...)
    • Moderators form cockroach (Now: Bontour), brainstorm (Bontour), other techrelated groups
    • Main members answering CUQ (I guess Donna is the one ...)
    • Leadership Circle? I don't think so ... (Casey is part of the technocrowd anyway)
  • Where to listen:
    • open-cs-dev-list (gmail)
    • more lists?
    • brainstorm
    • more tech-related groups
    • Parts of the CSWiki

Busfactor (what if you get hit by a bus)

Transparency and documentation is one of the main issues of this job, so there are not much secrets going down to the grave ...

Rewards

  • A lot of profile views
  • Respect/credit from other surfers
  • Regulary blamings from annoyed surfers
  • If you ask for it, you may get the official title "CS-Kammerjäger" or a fancy icon ...
  • ...
