The Catlins is located south of Dunedin and near Invercargill.
Following the Southern Scenic Route from Dunedin towards Balclutha, your first stop is Nuggett Point. You can observe penguins in twilight and seals on the rocks.
The best strategy, now, is to simply explore. If you want to stop and check something out, just do it, as there are many walks and beaches to stop at.

Highlights

Spending time at Canibal bay
Seeing the Purakaunui waterfalls
Visiting Cathedral caves at low tide
Taking a detour to visit the impressive Curio Bay

Tips

There are no Couchsurfers, but many places to stop and pitch a tent or a few places to stay at a camp ground/ motor camps and small backpackers. There are few services like petrol/gas stations and places to eat. Stock up before you go.
The largest town in the Catlins is Owaka. It has 400 people, and some services, so get what you might need from here.
