Taupo
From the CouchSurfing Wiki, an informal workspace which anyone can edit.
Taupo is a town next to the largest lake of New Zealand and Australasia. Lake Taupo is the remnants of one of human histories largest volcanoes, with its erruption in 181AD having effects seen in China. Due to Maori legend, the lake was formed by the removal of a giant fishes heart. The giant fish forms the shape of the North island of New Zealand.
The cheapest and one of the best places to go skydiving is in Taupo.
Travelling south is the Tongariro National Park
North leads to the thermal active area of Rotorua
Tips
Only walking distance from the town is the remarkable Hooker Falls. The highlight however, is a hot stream near the start of the track, which is a popular attraction most of the year round.
