What happened to BookShare!?
it sounded like a cool idea but alas it already exists. I guess it was a pretty good idea then. If you want to share books in a fun way visit BookCrossing.com, but pass the books along by hand, giving them to people that you meet and trust will value the book. They suggest you just leave the books somewhere like a coffee shop but that's impersonal and boring.
- BookCrossing is an existing book-sharing site. I'm always too lazy to enter my books there myself before giving them away, but it's a cool idea. How would this project differ from BC, and wouldn't it maybe be possible to cooperate with BookCrossing in some way? Or just encourage people to join BookCrossing? - Alright so about five minutes ago somebody told me about BookCrossing and I went to the site. I almost cried. Nearly the same motto, The logo of the maps site is exactly what I had sketched. Anyways it's time to tear this whole page down --Metal.lunchbox 17:33, 2 October 2006 (EST)
- Bookcrossing is a great idea (I released one book once, just in order to try it out but I never got caught in the game) BUT Traveling Memo Book is very different.
- The idea of Traveling Memo Book, as I get it, is to collectively write a new book from scratch, where collectively means every couchsurfer met by the book can add something to the book. It can become a collectively written tale of a (fantasy) travel around the world, it can deviate (in a positive sense) into a thriller book nobody knows where it's leading. Everything will depends on the starting point (what is written on the first page) and on the fantasy and intentions of the couchsurfers met by the book.
- (1) I suggest to leave this page and to move our comments into the discussion.
- (2) I suggest there should be more than one Traveling Book, with different initial titles and released in different part of the world. In that way, the probability of at least one surviving the selection process (not dying somewhere) is higher. I also would like to have different books in different languages.
- (3) I suggest to agree that on this wiki page, the current location of the Traveling Books must be always kept up to date (this requirement can be written in the first page of the Traveling Book).
- (4) Probably the licence of the book should be agreed in advance. As usual, I would go for a Creative Commons attribution/Share-a-like in which the copyrgith holder is the CouchSurfing Foundation. --Phauly 04:33, 3 October 2006 (EST)
Yes these ideas are part of the project. Several books, each contributor registers on this page, instructions on first page of book including a very simple and brief disclaimer about copyrights (or lefts). A story is certainly an interesting idea but i was thinking more along the lines of an amalgamation of different stories, sketches, poems, collages, etc. really whatever each contributor thinks will improve a blank page. Not every one is a novelist, but there is no reason we cannot have a traveling book that is a continuing story or a set of interconnected continuing freeform stories. I did that once with some friends of mine and had a lot of fun. If you have a notebook that you want to start circulating go ahead, and post it on this page. Just make sure that you distinguish the book somehow so that people know which book to register under. I'll paint a big "A" on the cover of my book--Metal.lunchbox 08:45, 3 October 2006 (EST)
BookShare could still exist
BookShare, within CouchSurfing, could still exist. A lot of BookCrossing books "disappear" from the system. I think this will be occurring less if books, or other objects are only passed on to other CouchSurfers.Objects can be registered on the website, and searched for. They could be books, or other things, such as ET, or musical instruments. Similar ideas have been proposed. People could have a list of things they want and a list of things they want to give away. hmmm. I like the idea. BookCrossing does also seem like a fundamentally different thing. Purpose of BookShare would be to touch people, reach peopel through lit, to really share. not just drop something and awe as it travels around like Wheres George? BookShare is dead, long live BookShare--Metal.lunchbox 14:37, 3 October 2006 (EST)
Okay, I brought BookShare back from the dead. --Metal.lunchbox 17:14, 17 November 2006 (EST)
