How about creating a separate page for Reykjavík? I'm keen on keeping things a bit organized and I think Reykjavík deserves it's own page but haven't got a clue how to make it. Maybe it's not necessary?? [[[User:Settapetta|Settapetta]] 11:59, 17 November 2008 (EST)]

accommodation in iceland

couchsurfing in iceland has been around for a short while now (iceland was the country where couchsurfing informally started) but has only recently become more established. one of the problems with a small population is that there are few people willing to offer a place to stay. while reykjavík has an adequate number of hosts and akureyri has a couple, there are a handfull of hosts scattered around the rest of the country and thus it is near impossible to couchsurf anywhere out of reykjavík and akureyri.

accommodation in iceland is seasonal dependant on the type of accommodation is being sought. while most hotels are open year-round, many hostels, guesthouses and camping grounds are only open during the tourist season, from the start of june through to the end of august. hotel chains include foss hotels http://www.fosshotel.is/en/index.php hotel edda http://en.hoteledda.is/ and icelandairhotels http://www.icehotels.is/

hostelling international run the main hostels in iceland. http://hostel.is/displayer.asp?cat_id=13

there are many campsites around the country although they are highly seasonal and most are only open for a short period of time over the summer months. http://www.nat.is/camping/camping_sites.htm Lotsofmagnets 18:44, 4 May 2008 (UTC)

food

the 2 main options for food are available throughout the country - eat out or do it yourslef from the supermarket. for anything longer than a brief visit you will probably find yourself in a supermarket, most likely one called bónus. the reason for this is the notoriously high price for food in iceland and bónus is the cheapest supermarket. the stores are easy to recognise from the bright yellow colour and the satisfied looking pig that frequently makes up the ó in bónus. http://bonus.is/ note the opening hours as most stores open around mid day and close around 6pm. the site is entirely in icelandic but clicking on "Afgreiðslutími og staðsetningar" will bring you to a page which shows store locations and opening hours. other supermarkets include hagkaup (which is also a department store) http://www.hagkaup.is/Default.asp?redirectssl=true (again all in icelandic but clicking on "verslanir" brings you to a list of store locations) nóatún http://www.noatun.is/ (again in icelandic, again click on "verslanir") and kronan http://kronan.is/ (same as with hagkaup and nóatún.)

most towns will have at least one café/restaurant and there are a large quantity in reykjavík, mainly centered around laugavegur and the surrounding streets. Lotsofmagnets 19:00, 4 May 2008 (UTC)
