Talk:Australia

The CouchSurfing Wiki, an informal workspace which anyone can edit.

Notes: Awesome medical info whoever did that! I tried to make everything into sentence form to shorten the amount of headings and to generally shorten the page. Hope you don't mind I changed your Kick butt info :) --RAH! 00:44, 11 January 2008 (UTC)

Images

I've deleted all images which have not specified what lisencing they involve. At this stage, as I understand it, we can only use images released into the public domain or we will be in breach of lisencing laws etc.

I think the simplest way to proceed is if you take the photo yourself, state you wish to release it into the public domain (I'll have to get back to you about correct wording) and that can be used in the wiki.

If you take works from other csers ask them if it's okay to release the work into the public domain.

Watch this space, eventually I'll write more here.

Structure and Style

We will be reviewing the structure of the page and the content. At this stage there is too much detail. The idea is that anything that can be found via another webpage will not be included. For example Wikitravel info on Wollongong can be found on the NSW or Sydney wikitravel page and such detail is not relevant on a country-wide level.

Again, we'll explain a good style guide to adhere to and explain why the wiki is strutured as it is once we have completed our changes..

stay posted!--Sarah 02:09, 3 January 2008 (UTC)

Basic Style Guidelines

  • Information has to be kept to a minimum, long webpages are not good style. Rather people prefer to move between many webpage rather than scroll down one big page. Keep things short, even if it means sacrificing detail. Too much detail can be a bad thing.
  • Keep lists of links to a minimum, these are not readable and are very difficult to extract information from.
  • Do not repeat information.
  • Stick to themes travellers will have in common, simple stuff such as: information on the states and capital cities; Australian culture; travel in and between states and common themes that apply to all visitors to Australia. If people want detail, let them go to a travel guide or look online. It is impossible to list all events that everyone can enjoy without sacrificing the length of the wiki. The exception to the rule is to include a kooky fact to make your introduction about the place a little more interesting or readable.

Australia intro

Bascially I shortened things up, got rid of some of the links under 'useful links' because we want links to relate to stuff that should hopefully relate to all travellers - immigration and stuff like that. I also introduced the capital cities and corresponding states because it's just occured to me not everyone will know which cities correspond to which state and the wiki is set up to be searched by state or territory.

Getting Around

I removed the car hire and bus company links, instead I encouraged people to check the yellowpages under bus/coach companies, airlines and other things.

Additionally rather than mention one link with a bullet point I incorporated this information in a sentence to make the page flow better. Lists were left with bullet points.

States and Territories

Rather than have a very massive long list which is difficult to read, instead we shold focus on the main areas of interest which are:

  • The states
  • The capital cities

Of these two points I think it is only important to mention:

  • The relevant wikipedia page
  • The relevant wikitravel page
  • The relevant cs group page
  • If possible the relevant cs wiki page
  • The relevant offical tourism guide produced by the state

All other links are too much detail and make the page difficult to read. This detailed information should be found in any of the five webpages above. Or if not, then state-specific wikis should be created or people can use the search engine.

All deletions have been listed below so the information is not lost:

Deleted from Western Australia

These links below have been removed because while they are excellent resources on their own, we need to keep things short and readable. In theory any of the information below should be linked to from the major wikipedia, wikitravel, government travel pages etc. If not couchsurfers can always ask in the groups!

Couchsurfing links: (this can be found under the Aussie group, it's not a capital city and it's a small group)

Ohter links:

Shark Bay, Kimberley Wikipedia, Broome Wikipedia, Broome Wikitravel, Fremantle Wikipedia, Fremantle Wikitravel, Rottnest Island Wikipedia, Kalgoorlie Wikipedia, Kalgoorlie Wkitravel, Margaret_River Wikipedia, Bunbury Wikipedia, Albany Wikipedia

Note: Tourist attractions are individual specific, we cannot cater to everyone's taste therefore this type of information should be upto the couchsurfer to find out by either asking in groups, looking in their guide or searching on the web.

WA Tourist Attractions

Deletions from Victoria

Similar stuff to those previously metioned in the WA deletions. Again lots of great links but we need to keep things short. As before mentioned, stick to capital cities and state information. Leave the tourist attractions upto the groups and travel guides.

Victorian Tourist Attractions

Deletions from SA

These groups are not capital cities or related to the state, and they are very small groups.

These pages are not state or capital city related. Unfortunately to save space we have to remove them.

SA Tourist Attractions (Again this depends on the perspective of the individual)

Other state deletions

There's too much information to put here, but basically I deleted links to other wikis that aren't capital cities. Also I got rid of tourist attractions because information on these things should be found through the official state tourism page, they may also not be applicable to a wider audience. Finally I deleted links to very small inactive groups. --RAH! 09:38, 4 January 2008 (UTC)

Shameless self promotion

This isn't a forum for self promotion. It's not in good taste to add links to your own website which contains ads, spam and other gibberish. --Onecouch 17:32, 7 January 2009 (EST)
