Photo sizes
When a photo is set as main photo on a profile it is automatically resized and compressed. Resizing takes the largest dimension on the photo and scales this to 300 pixels. The other dimension is scaled to maintain the aspect ratio. So for example if the photo to be used is 800 pixels wide by 815 pixels tall, the resulting image on your profile's main page will be 294 pixels wide by 300 pixels tall. For best results, the uploaded photo should have its largest dimension divisible by 300. This will allow the scaling to appear more smooth. However, the further automatic jpeg compression will often remove this preserved smoothness.
For the other photos on the photo page the process is similar to above but using 600 pixels instead of 300. Compression of these photos can also be less since these photos are accessed much less frequently.
