Couchsurfing Events in Nova Scotia

Most of the events center around Halifax, though some of these events do entail journeys to other areas of the province. Also journeys to the farther reaches of the province, or out of province, are often arranged on the Halifax group postings. Note that this much more popular than the Nova Scotia group itself.

Couchsurfing Tips and Transportation Tips

One of the major problems of couchsurfing and traveling in the Maritime provinces is that of transportation. while this problem is less acute in Nova Scotia, there may still be long waits ahead. The ferry from Maine (either Bar Harbour or Portland) does not always marry up well with arriving or departing buses. The ferries to Newfounfland are fairly dependable, though they are usually dependent on weather conditions (which may the case even on the nicest day in summer). The national parks, are not very accessible from public transport, and even if soem form of transport is achieved, then touring them is not viable without some means of getting around. The Halifax airport poses a serious obstacle to many travelers. It is approximately 35km outside of Halifax and is the major air hub of the region. People will often fly in here and look for cheaper onward options. There is a shuttle to Prince Edward Island, and if heading to Truro the cost of a cab ride is about twice as much as to Halifax.

As can be expected by the transportation problems, many enthusiastic hosts don't see many people pass their way. In case of the access to private transport, these hosts provide a viable aleternative to the big cities.
