Located on the east coast of the North Island, south of Gisborne and near Hastings. It is a small city with a population of about 55,000, and more ethnically homogenous than diverse.

Napier was devastated by an earthquake in 1931, and much rebuilding occurred in the Art Deco style. Known as the Art Deco City, Napier has in recent years become an international tourist attraction for those interested in the style. February sees Art Deco Weekend, including guests and locals in 30s costume, vintage motor vehicles, the "Great Gatsby" long lunch, and many other events.

The area has many wineries near by, as well as orchards producing apples and summer fruit. There is often a lot of seasonal work available associated with this.

Napier has a small airport at Westshore, and is also easily accessible through major NZ coachlines, with the main bus terminal close to the city centre.
