Tips

  • This will sound really stupid to people from Latin America but, Don't Drink Tap Water!!

Travel

There is a lot of public transportation in the city, and it is very inexpensive. The subway (Metro) is very good, and costs about 25 cents, and you can transfer to any subway to get to your destination. It is a good way to travel, if there happens to be a subway station near where you want to go. The Metro is usually reliable, but sometimes service is suspended.

Buses connect all the city but they don't have a fixed schedule. You can travel anywhere in the city by busses, but it is difficult to know which bus goes where.

Taxis are cheap, and in most cases are reliable. They get you to where you want to go. There are tourist taxis at most large hotels, where the drivers speak English and the cars are large late model cars, but of course they charge about twice as much as the street taxis. You can also get a "sitio" taxi, which are taxis that are sent to pick you up. At night it is probably better that you should only use "sitio" taxis, or tourist hotel taxis, because some criminals have been known to use fake taxis to do their dirty work. Real taxis always must have a plate that starts with the letter L or S.

Buy a "Guia Roji" of Mexico City, which has a map of the metro. There probably is a map of the bus routes, but they change so often that no map can be very good for long. Busses, like cars, go through the natural routes that exist for them, ie, they probably travel on the main streets and avenues shown in the "Guia Roji" so take the busses, or travel by taxi.

Mexico City is full of good events happening every day. There are classic and pop concerts every day, and there are more than 50 professional theaters with shows as good as Broadway or London, but at about one fifth the cost... There are classic music and ballet and opera at Bellas Artes, Sala Nezahualcoyotl, and Sala Ollin Yolitzli... You can find out what is happening anytime in the city in a magazine called "Tiempo Libre".
