Maastricht (Mestreech in Limburgish) is a city in the very South of the Netherlands. It is the capital of the province of Dutch Limburg and has about 122.000 inhabitants. Maastricht is one of the most popular destinations for local tourist. Most people come for the relaxed atmosphere in the old city centre and to have a drink at one of the many terrasses at Vrijthof or Onzelievevrouweplein.
Other attractions are e.g. the Bonnefantenmuseum, a modern building by Aldo Rossi and Sint-Pietersberg. The latter one is nature park on a hill south of the city centre. There are man made caves with guide tours.
Annual Carnival is the absolute highlight of the city. It officially starts on 11/11 at 11:11am, but by far the most popular is the carnival parade on Sunday before Ash Wednesday, which is usually sometime in February.

Tips
Maastricht is easy to access by train from Amsterdam(3h), Liege (30min) and Brussels (2h). By bus from nearby towns in Belgium and from Aachen in Germany. Maastricht Aachen Airport provides cheap direct flights from Berlin and Bucharest.
When you like organic local food products, you can go to the small organic farmers’ market (biologische boerenmarkt) every Thursday afternoon at Wycker Brugstraat.
You can have cheap meals at the student restaurant (Mensa) of Maastricht University. A main course costs 4,00 Euro, a vegetarian option is available for the same price.
In case you consider eating at MacDonald’s at the Markt square, rather buy a portion of fries at snackbar next to it. They serve the best fries in town. Local specialities are vlaai (sweet fruit pie) and zuurvlees/zoervleisj (a stew of pork meat with a sweet and sour gravy)
