Opening 09

The celebration of the beginning of Linz’s Capital of Culture year will last three days. On New Year’s Eve, the banks of the Danube between the new Ars Electronica Center, the Nibelungen Bridge, the Lentos Kunstmuseum and the Brucknerhaus will be the scene of a colourful spectacle featuring fireworks and musical surprises. 31. 12. 08 – 2. 1. 09 // Diverse locations in Linz

The Fuhrer’s Capital of Culture

Linz had high hopes for Hitler’s policies. This exhibition documents the projects planned and realized by Nazi cultural policymakers as well as the atrocities behind them. 17. 9. 08 – 13. 4. 09 // Schlossmuseum Linz

Tower Music

A whiff of the Middle Ages wafts through the streets when the trumpets’ blare resounds from the steeple of the Old City’s Parish Church, reviving an ancient tradition that had lapsed into oblivion. 30. 11. 08 – 31. 12. 09 // Stadtpfarrkirche

Crossing Europe Filmfestival

This annual film festival will be one of the featured attractions of the 2009 Capital of Culture. About 150 select feature films and documentaries from all over the continent are screened − outstanding examples of fresh young European auteur filmmaking. 20. – 26. 4. 09 // Moviemento, City Kino, Kapu, OK Offenes Kulturhaus OÖ

Hoehenrausch

Artists conduct you to the rooftops of Linz, to spectacular overviews and epiphanies of contemporary art. Quite a different Linz awaits discovery here in the uppermost part of town where visitors get a little bit closer to heaven. 28. 5. – 13. 9. 09 // OK Offenes Kulturhaus OÖ, rooftops of Linz

Linzfest09

Past and future European Capitals of Culture will be guests at Linz’s traditional Whitsun festival: foreign languages, rhythms and images coalesce into a colourful mosaic showcasing a united Europe. An added attraction at Linz09’s “halftime show”: the Yes 09 Youth European Soccer Cup 09. 30. 5. – 1. 6. 09 // Donaupark

Culture Bathing

A dip in the river by moonlight: Ottensheim, a community on the banks of the Danube near Linz, invites swimmers to a 24-hour open-air bathing theatre on five weekends. Take the plunge and go with the flow! 20. 6. – 9. 8. 09 // Ottensheim

Linz Europe Festival

Austrian musician Hubert von Goisern will have travelled some of Europe’s great rivers as Linz09’s goodwill ambassador. At the grand finale of his expedition, artists he encountered along the way will reunite in Linz for a three-day celebration of European musical creativity. 3. – 5. 7. 09 // Port of Linz

Pflasterspektakel

A theatrical atmosphere and incomparable flair fill the city when 130 groups from here, there and everywhere turn Linz into a street art stage for three days. 23. – 25. 7. 09 // Inner city

The European Green Belt

Where the Iron Curtain once separated Europe into two halves, the continent’s “green belt” now connects landscapes from Finland to the Black Sea. The opening exhibition in the new South Wing of the Schlossmuseum takes a look at a part of recent history. 2. 7. 09 – 8. 1. 10 // Schlossmuseum Linz

Klangwolke and Brucknerfest

The music settles upon the city like a cloud of sound. First, modern as a visualized Gesamtkunstwerk; then, classical as the opening concert of the Brucknerfest − two traditional highpoints of cultural life in Linz. Visualisierte linzer Klangwolke: 5. 9. 09 // Donaupark Klassische linzer Klangwolke and opening of Brucknerfest: 13. 9. 09 // Brucknerhaus

Ars Electronica Festival

In 2009 Ars Electronica celebrates 30 years of its existence, which finds expression in a comprehensive digital archive. The festival, which will be taking place in 2009 from 3 to 8 September, will be dedicated in its entirety to “Zukunft/Future”. It will be all about the attraction of daring visions of our future and the general question as to our concept of futurity.
