- Constitutional Hill is the site of the Constitutional Court and the Old Fort Prison complex where many political activists were detained, inlcuding Nelson Mandela and Mahatma Gandhi. Take a tour of the prison, and the constitutional court, whose lobby is home to an excellent art collection. Tour Price: R22

Johannesburg has a notorious reputation with regards to crime, but this doesn't mean you shouldn't explore the city. Some areas like Hillbrow, are best explored with a guide. Inner city Johannesburg can also be intimidating, especially at night. Just use some common sense, be cautious and aware of your surroundings and follow these safety tips.
- Be cautious outside the central bus station (Park Station). It is notorious for muggings.
