  • Constitutional Hill is the site of the Constitutional Court and the Old Fort Prison complex where many political activists were detained, inlcuding Nelson Mandela and Mahatma Gandhi. Most clubs in Johannesburg enforce a strict dress code, meaning no sneakers or t-shirts. So guys, save yourself from being turned away by a big bouncer - shine your shoes and wear a buttoned shirt, or at least a collared shirt! Entrance fees range from R50- R150.

Safety Tips for Travellers

Johannesburg has a notorious reputation with regards to crime, but this doesn't mean you shouldn't explore the city. Some areas like Hillbrow, are best explored with a guide. Inner city Johannesburg can also be intimidating, especially at night. Just use some common sense, be cautious and aware of your surroundings and follow these safety tips.

  • Be cautious outside the central bus station (Park Station). It is notorious for muggings.
