Gomel (Гомель, also Homyel, Gomel', Homel') is the second largest city of Belarus. It's located on the south-east of the country, very close to the borders of Russia and the Ukraine. City population is a little less than 500.000 people.

Travel

The city of Gomel today is a complex transport junction, the largest one in the south-east of Belarus, where railway lines, highways and air routes to Moscow, Saint Petersburg, the Caucasus, Kiev, the Crimea, Odessa, Brest, the Baltic trades ports Klaipeda, Kaliningrad and other intersect:

Within the city the travel is rather cheap. A bus (trolleybus) ticket costs 500 rubel (USD 0,2), the transport goes from 5.30 a.m. till 11 p.m. "Marshrutka" - a small bus going along a fixed route costs around 1000-1100 rubel (USD 0,5).

Places to visit

In Gomel itself there is a famous park and palace complex created by former owners of the city. The park has also a beautiful cathedral, chapel and crypt.

Markets

Fresh and rather cheap food may be bought at the markets. Most city districts have at least one, there is also Central Market which is located in the centre of the city not far away from the train station.

Restaurants

  • Korchma "Budzma" is a tavern providing ethnic food and drinks. It is located near the train station. The prices are relatively available. A nice dinner for two will be up to 20 Euro.
  • Restaurant "Staroye Vremja" is not only a place to eat in the centre of the city but a place to enjoy wicked décor. A dinner for two is up to 30 Euro here.
