Introduction to Dresden

Most famous sites

Dresden's most well-known site surely is the Frauenkirche (Church of Our Lady).

Annual Events

Filmnächte am Elbufer

The Filmnächte is an open air cinema next to the Elbe river. Enjoying the movies you also get to enjoy the view on Dresden's Old Town.

Bunte Republik Neustadt

Every summer, Dresden's New Town (Neustadt), well known for its nightlife, turns into a huge festival with music, games and small shops and street hawks selling alternative goods. Bunte Republik Neustadt (BRN, Colorful Republic of Neustadt) is a pun to Bundesrepublik Deutschland (BRD, Federal Republic of Germany).

Getting to other cities

General

Train

Deutsche Bahn is Germany's train service provider. For their website you get all information you need for travels starting in Germany.

Shared Rides (Mitfahrgelegenheit)

One of the most common ways of traveling from one city to another in Germany and its neighboring countries is sharing a ride. It normally costs less that a train ticket, but you depend on the people that are offering a ride (sometimes even more reliable than Deutsche Bahn). The two major web-pages for this are mitfahrgelegenheit.de (yet in German only) and mitfahrzentrale.de.

Prague

Train

Deutsche Bahn trains go to Prague for 30€. A cheaper option would be to take the S-Bahn to Schöna (free for students in Dresden, otherwise 5€), cross the border on foot and get a Czech train ticket for 6€ at the first station (about 30 min. walking to Dolni Zleb). For roughly the same price, some regional buses go to Teplice, you can catch a train there as well. For a one day trip to Prague and back for 2 people a SONE+ ticket is reasonable (kind of weekend ticket of CD, valid either Saturday or Sunday).

Bus

Buses to Prage leave daily and also get in daily. The regional bus company RVD offers its Bohemia Express. A cheaper but not a regional company is Berlin Linien Bus.

Shared Rides

A fair price would be 8€.

Hitchhiking

From Hauptbahnhof (central station) get on bus no. 72 or 76 and get off at "Technische Universität". Then show your smile, sign (preferably saying "CZ") and your thumb.
If that does not work, try bus no. 424 in the direction of Nossen. Ask the bus driver if he can drop you off at the roadhouse "Dresdner Tor". It is on the highway A4, but on the wrong side. To cross you may need to take a longer walk to find a tunnel.

Bike

The Elbe Cycle Route takes you upstream the river Elbe (Czech: Labe) and later upstream the Vltava (German: Moldau) to Prague. It's a beautiful longer ride but you always have the contrary wind against you.

Berlin

Shared Rides

A fair price would be 10 €.

Hitchhiking

Take tram no. 3 or 13 to "Lisztstraße" and later bus no. 81 in order to get to the stop "St. Pauli Friedhof". Search for the gas station and ask people there for a lift to Berlin.

Leipzig

Shared Rides

A fair price would be 6 €.

Hitchhiking

Take tram no. 3 or 13 to "Lisztstraße" and later bus no. 81 in order to get to the stop "St. Pauli Friedhof". Search for the gas station and ask people there for a lift to Leipzig.

Wroclaw

Hitchhiking

Starting point is Shell petrol station, on the way from the city to the A4. To get there, you go to Bahnhof Neustadt and walk up Hanstastraße for 600m or so, or you can get a bit closer (less walk) with tram stop Friedenstraße on line 13. You go up Hanstastraße past a McDonalds, straight ahead, straight ahead, until you see Shell. Once you're there, ask for a ride to Bauzten and get aoff at the Raststätte, a big petrol station/food complex, 5km away from Bautzen or so. It's on the Autobahn, the name Oberlausitz. Once you are there, you can ask the drivers for a ride to Wroclaw.
