The cable car ride could easily fall out of your budget, so if you're traveling with 2 or 3 other people, I would recommend splitting a cab for a ride all the way to the top. When I went in March 2008, it cost my family of 5 (we all fit in 1 cab - illegal, but some drivers do it) R$120 for him to pick us up from where we were staying, bring us all the way to the top, and bring us back to our apartment. Kind of pricey, but a lot cheaper than trying to get there ourselves and paying for the cable car individually. Go early and beat the crowds. If you go with a taxi or in a rented car, check out two other lookouts nearby, and possibly get a picture with the Christ in the background from the helicopter landing pad without the crowds clogging the picture.
