Canada is a constitutional monarchy occupying the northern part of the North American continent. It comprises 10 Provinces and 3 Territories.
Couchsurfing in Canada
As of late 2009, Canada was fourth for total number of couchsurfers in any country. Numerous cities are within the top 100 cities with the most members:
-Montreal (4th)
-Toronto (14th)
-Vancouver (31st)
-Quebec City (50th)
-Ottawa (86th)
-Calgary (91st)
In addition, Edmonton, Victoria, Winnipeg and Halifax all have more than 500 members.
Despite the relatively high number of couchsurfers from Canada, formalized CS events on the whole are not as common in the USA or Europe. Outside of the major cities it is worth checking the city's group for more information on smaller events.
Climate
Canada's climate varies greatly throughout the year. For current weather conditions in Canada, visit Environment Canada's Canadian Weather Page. Canada's winter is long and harsh. It can last from September through until May, although recent years have seen serious winter conditions last from November through late March.
During the winter period, temperatures below -40C (-40F) can be experienced at any time, so it is extremely important to be prepared if traveling to Canada during this time. Warm clothing is essential when spending any time outside. Exposed skin will freeze quickly, so be sure to cover up. Multiple layers of clothing are recommended, including thermal undergarments, a warm "regular" layer, and an outer layer of wind and water resistant fabric. Don't forget a toque (beanie, winter hat, etc) mittens/gloves and insulated boots with lots of grip.
