How to overcome small talk?

Point of view from non-smalltalk country. This could only happens with Finns: Guy flies Helsinki-LA plenty of times for work, each time chatting happily away with foreigners occupying the seat next to him. Then one time coming back home another Finn sits next to him - identified by a Finnish book he's reading. During the whole flight they exchange no words, just sit, eat, sleep and read. Surprise, on the connecting flight they're still sitting together, no words exchanged. Same thing in the airport bus. Neither of them smiles, to acknowledge the coincidence happening yet again. There is no reason. They are Finns, after all: you only say something when you have a reason to do so.

Why is it so easy to have deep personnal conversations when we are couchsurfing?
