Couchsurfing alternatives

If you don't find yourself a host you may want to find a cheap room for one or two nights. The price range of hotel rooms is very widespread in Basel but you will hardly find a single room for a cheap price. Best alternative is to go the Youth Hostel or the Backpackers Hostel. There you will get a room in the dormitory (6 or 8 Beds) for around 30 Swiss Francs. You will not find any cheaper room in Basel itself (When not of Couchsurfing of course).

Internet

The following places provide internet access. If you stay in a youth hostel you will have internet acces there.

Locations

The Couchsurfing wiki is no tourist or travel guide so we will not provide such information but you may have a look at the following sites:

Party

  • Das Schiff: is a ship on the Rhine and one of the best party locations in Basel. If you don't know where it is it can be tricky to find it. Let your host lead you there.
  • Club Kaserne: A good club to party in the city center. Often quite expensive concerts (entrance 25 CHF or more).
  • Kuppel: The Kuppel is a small yet very nice place for partying. It is quite in the city centre. The Kuppel is famous for their oldies music parties.
  • Sommercasino: is a party location frequented mostly by a younger audience. Fine location, though.
  • Nordstern: The 'Nordstern' (northern star) is a nice party club, famous for their balkan beats party.
  • A2: Biggest party place in Basel and (is i personally think) quite uncool.
  • Fame: for the famous.
  • Atlantis:

Bars

Basel is not Berlin. You'll find a lot of nice bars and cafes but don't expect a list of dozens of bars here. Go to the city centre and walk around. Basel is a small town and you can easily walk around its epicentre...

  • Mitte
  • Barometer
  • Roter Engel
  • Bar Rouge
  • EoIpso
  • Brauner Mutz
  • Paddy Reyllies
  • Pickwick Pub

Museums

Basel has a whole load of museums. You may purchase a 'Museumspass', a museum access card which is cheaper when going to several museums. Even if you don't believe it, Basel has all of the following museums: Anatomisches Museum, Naturhistorisches Museum, Cartoonmuseum, Designmuseum, Puppenhausmuseum, Museum der Kulturen, Kunstmuseum, Museum für Gegenwartskunst, Papiermuseum, ...

Other places

  • Basel zoo: Basel has a big zoo. I personally think the zoo is a very nice place especially during summer. There are areas with different kind of animals living toghether (i.e. hippos and zebras and other african animals), a monkeyhouse, a big vivarium, penguins, elephants and so on. Visit the Basel Zoo Homepage for more information.
  • Rural places: Basel is (at least in Swiss measures) quite an urban area. If you're looking for beautiful mountains and such, check out the Rural places section in the Switzerland article.
  • [Basel theatre]: The theater is very nice, playing every night. Quite expensive, though.
