Aoraki, or Mount Cook in English, is located in the Southern Alps of Te Wai Pounamu in Mount Cook National Park. Several of New Zealand's highest mountains can be found in this Park including the highest, Mount Cook, more commonly known these days by its Ngāi Tahu (the local Maori iwi) name Aoraki.

Mount Cook village contains two large (and expensive) tourist hotels, a YHA hostel, and housing for a couple of hundred workers.

There is a D.O.C. basic camping area beside White Horse Hill - water and toilets.

Lots of great walking tracks of varying difficulty. Information on walks, huts and weather is available from the D.O.C. Visitor Centre.
