alpha.couchsurfing.com will be a testing ground for new features. Everyone is welcome to create users and play around.

It will be a kind of developer playground without any real data. All users there will be fake, without any real names or emails or pictures or anything. Developers will be allowed more or less full access so they can learn how the site's inner workings work and try things out.

We can also use it to show potential features. We will use 'beta' to show potential features by trusted devs that we aren't ready to put on the live site, and 'alpha' to show potential features by untrusted devs using fake data. 'alpha' is likely to be broken half the time. 'beta' is likely to be broken occasionally (like the current site has been). the live site will hopefully very rarely be broken once alpha and beta are working.

Next week alpha will be announced to a wider audience.

Goals

testing stuff before it ends up on the live server (currently)
testing new features (later)
creation of a database that developers can use on their local machines (as opposed to giving out the real database without specific parts)

We started with an empty user base. Feel free to create an account and help the developers kill bugs.

In order to avoid Google and other search engines to index it robots.txt is set to

Current issues

uploading pictures doesn't work
after creating an account it shows the whole terms of use
some messages and other point to www.couchsurfing.com, directing you off the Alpha site
verification, 2nd level gives error:
